Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is gearing up to launch its own commercial AI model following the AI revolution ignited by OpenAI’s ChatGPT in December of the previous year. AI has become the trending buzzword online, with major organizations like Google, Microsoft, and Opera jumping on board. Now, Meta plans to make its Generative AI Model available to the general public, a move that aligns it with industry leaders in the AI field. Meta had previously introduced its Large Language Model (LLM) named LLaMa, but only a limited number of researchers and academics had access to it.

By publicly releasing its AI model, Meta aims to catch up with its competitors in the Generative AI domain. One notable aspect is that Meta intends to make LLaMa open source, allowing anyone to access and modify the model. This sets it apart from OpenAI, whose code remains closed-source and inaccessible to third parties.

Meta’s Global Affairs Chief, Nick Clegg, emphasized that openness is crucial to address concerns surrounding AI. Additionally, an open model enables companies of all sizes to enhance the technology and build applications on top of it, aiding Meta in its quest to catch up with rivals.

However, it is important to note that open-source does not equate to free. Inside sources reveal that Meta plans to charge enterprises for the ability to customize its AI model using proprietary data. While Meta has not officially confirmed this, Joelle Pineau, Meta’s Vice President of AI research, stated that releasing something open source doesn’t mean relinquishing intellectual property rights.

The commercialization of Meta’s AI model implies that popular platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Facebook will soon benefit from AI capabilities. Whether this will be advantageous for users remains to be seen. The success of LLaMa in competing with established AI models offered by industry giants like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI is yet to be determined.

In summary, Meta’s upcoming commercial AI model, LLaMa, marks the company’s entry into the AI space. Making it open source allows for collaboration and innovation, but Meta may charge enterprises for customization using proprietary data. The impact on users and its ability to rival existing AI models will be revealed in due time.
