NASA is planning to bring 4G to the moon with the help of Nokia’s Research arm Bell Labs. The budget for this project is $370 million. NASA will provide $14.1 million to the Finnish telecommunication company to bring the 4G set up on the moon surface.

Twitter announcement:

To the moon! 🌕

We are excited to have been named by @NASA as a key partner to advance “Tipping Point” technologies for the moon, to help pave the way towards sustainable human presence on the lunar surface.

So, what technology can you expect to see? (1/6) pic.twitter.com/wDNwloyHdP

NASA and Bell Labs announced this on October 15th separately through Twitter.

Our pioneering innovations will be used to build and deploy the first wireless network on the moon, starting with 4G/LTE technologies and evolving to 5G. – Bell Labs in Twitter.

Last month NASA also announces about their mission of sending humans to the moon by 2024. This includes the first woman followed by a man to study the Lunar Surface. NASA also plans to make a sustainable environment on the Moon by 2028.

On the other hand, Nokia has also a partner Vodafone Germany to introduce a 4G network on the Moon. This initial setup will be LTE but in the future can also become 5G.

“With NASA funding, Nokia will look at how terrestrial technology could be modified for the lunar environment to support reliable, high-rate communications,” Reuter said as quoted by UPI.com.

This set up will be helpful to astronauts to communicate better with the rovers and between each other or maybe in the future with us back to the Earth.
