On October 4, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other company’s internal systems were down due to a massive outage. The Outage happened for 6 hours until Facebook resolved it made everything online. This was the worst outage since the 2019 incident which took Facebook and its services down for more than 24 hours. And that incident hit hard on small businesses and creators who rely on these services for their income.

Now, the Facebook Engineering team has posted an official statement explaining the cause of the outage. They made sure it was a technical error and no involvement of third party. The social media giant wants you to know that it wasn’t a malicious activity that caused the downtime.

The Facebook official statement reads, “The underlying cause of this outage also impacted many of the internal tools and systems we use in our day-to-day operations, complicating our attempts to quickly diagnose and resolve the problem.”

“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication,” Facebook explained. “This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt,” it further added.

In other words, Facebook is saying that the downtime was occurred due to a faulty configuration change on the company’s end. And made sure that there was no malicious activity behind this outage. Facebook also added that there is no evidence of the compromised user data as a result of this downtime.
