Google following steps of Apple and Samsung will be ditching the charger in the box. It mentions Google Pixel 5A will be the last phone to have an in-box charger. This will set Google alongside Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi to sell a smartphone without a charger. Google gives hint to remove the charger in the box for the Pixel 6 series.

According to Google, most people already have a USB-C charging brick. So there is no need to include a charger in the box with the purchase of the phone. This seems similar to the statements passed by Samsung and Apple when they took the move to ditch the charger in the box. These giants mention that removing these chargers will reduce the e-waste theoretically.

When observed practically, companies are removing the chargers but still not reducing the cost of the product. Consumers, on the other hand, are looking to buy chargers from third-party companies. So this means more e-waste and paperwork. At first, when Apple said this move was taken in order to prevent greenhouse gas emissions and reduce e-waste it seemed to be a very nice move. Things become more complicated when the company has given a cable from USB-C to lighting. All the previous iPhone users will be having a brick that has a USB-A except the iPhone 11.

This means all those who are upgrading from old generations of iPhone will have to buy a new power brick for extra bucks. So Apple has forced people to buy a new power brick and will be giving the brick in a new box with more paperwork that also leads to more greenhouse gas emissions. Well coming to the Samsung and Xiaomi part Xiaomi at least has mentioned that users will be getting the option to have a charger in the box for no extra charge. But in the case of Android phones, you get to find different manufacturers with different charging technologies and speeds.

I do appreciate the thinking of the smartphone giants to reduce e-waste but the move has to be done in a perfect strategic manner. If all the companies had the same port and speed then users will be not thinking of buying another power brick. With big companies following this move smaller companies will find it easy to move in that direction.

So, that’s been it. Thank you for reading, and do share the article if you get a bit piece of information. Also, keep an eye on this space for more relevant updates. Stay safe, and we hope to see you around.
