The world’s second-biggest smartphone ship vendor became first in the Q3 of 2020. Mediatek crosses Qualcomm for the first time with 31 percent of the market, according to counterpoint research. This was only possible because of its strong performance in the $100 – $250 segment. The company has also got great growth in China and India, making MediaTek achieve this position.

While Qualcomm is the biggest chip vendor for 5G smartphones in Q3 of 2020, it has powered 39% of the 5G phones sold worldwide. With the increase in demand of 5G smartphones growing as Apple also released its 5G line-up, Qualcomm has the chance to capture the first position in Q4. In Q3 itself, the 5G phones’ demand has doubled, with 17% of smartphones sold having 5G.

The sales of phones in Xiaomi having MediaTek increased by three times since the last year. MediaTek also got the advantage of the Huawei ban in the US. This led many companies to go with MediaTek chips fabricated by the TSMC due to their affordable cost. The performance in the mid-range price segment and emerging areas like LATAM and MEA is also another reason.

CounterPoint Researcher also said, “MediaTek and Qualcomm have both reshuffled their portfolio, and consumer focus has also played a key role. He also mentions the world’s cheapest 5G smartphone, Realme v3, is powered by MediaTek.

Apple also has increased its share compared to its Q2, while the shares of Samsung declined from 16%. Huawei also has got no growth in their shares and is still 12 percent. Now the focus of the smartphone chip vendors will be on 5G to bring to the masses. The availability of 5G unlocks many opportunities, such as cloud gaming. This will also boost the sales of the higher clocked GPU’s and powerful CPUs. The competition will be getting more intense..”
