Sony Commits to Years of Xperia Android Smartphone Releases with Qualcomm Partnership.

Sony Xperia lineup of Android phones, although not widely popular, is here to stay. Despite their exorbitant pricing, which makes them a tough sell, Sony has announced its commitment to releasing Android smartphones for years to come.

In a press release, Sony and Qualcomm revealed a “multi-year” deal that ensures the continuation of Snapdragon chips in Xperia smartphones across both premium and mid-range segments.

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. expressed its extended collaboration with Sony in incorporating Snapdragon platforms into the tech giant’s future smartphones. The companies have agreed to work together on developing the next generations of premium, high-end, and mid-tier Xperia smartphones.

Sony has enjoyed a close relationship with Qualcomm for quite some time, but this announcement holds significance as it paves the way for an influx of Xperia phones in the market.

Historically, the Xperia lineup has overlooked the US market, with phones only available unlocked and at steep price points. The recently announced Xperia 1 V, for example, will launch in about a month with a price tag of $1,400. Even on the global stage, Sony’s market share remains relatively small. While Sony performs well in Japan, its home market, the company has witnessed a decline there as well.

Although some may question Sony’s decision to persist in the Android phone market, it is commendable to see the company making an effort. As the Android smartphone market becomes increasingly concentrated, particularly in the high-end segment, having more options, no matter how limited, is beneficial.
