Recently we have got the news about Apple bringing a tool to scan photos in iCloud. Now it seems Apple has been already scanning your emails in the iCloud since 2019. This news is confirmed by the 9to5Mac  that has been investigating that topic. This scanning is only limited to emails and not photos or conversations.

Epic’s anti-fraud head Eric Friedman reportedly said that Apple’s iOS is the greatest platform for distributing child porn. In a statement, Apple mentioned that it has been scanning both incoming and outgoing mails in iCloud. Scanning the mails in the iCloud is easy for Apple as the emails are not encrypted. In the post, it mentions a statement from an archived page from Apple regarding the CASM.

The page reads Apple is dedicated to the safety of the children in their range of products. Apple uses image-matching technology to find out and report CASM. It is just like the spam filter in the emails that uses electronic signatures to find the CASM material. All these matches are reviewed individually and if found will disable the material. We also have a report in the last year that states how Apple is scanning the emails. Apple has been using metadata of images to scan the emails that have been tagged as CASM material.

A cybersecurity expert at the University of Surrey says that Apple is using a safe way to protect the privacy and safeguard to prevent CASM material in emails. So this means Apple is still bound to its companies policy to not interfere with user’s privacy. We are not sure whether Apple will be using the same technology or might develop another for the scanning of images in iCloud.

So that’s been it. Thank you for reading, and do share the article if you get a bit piece of information. Also, keep an eye on this space for more relevant updates. Stay safe, and we hope to see you around.
