While Google, Apple, Samsung, and other brands compete in the innovations era (Oh, sorry Zuck, let me include Metaverse too), Microsoft is silently killing the competition in its own style. Microsoft’s Windows 11, well, I love that; it has also launched its second-generation foldable smartphone (I think I can call it that) Surface Duo 2. However, Microsoft seems to fold something else, this time, it’s a mouse. The company calls the mouse a “deformable body” that can physically bend. First spotted by a Deutsch tech website WindowsUnited, Microsoft registered a patent named “Foldable Mouse.”

The abstract of the patent reads, “A foldable computer mouse is provided that includes a deformable body configurable to be formed into a first expanded configuration usable for receiving inputs for controlling a computing device and a second folded configuration in which a first portion of the deformable body is folded over a second portion of the deformable body. The mouse also includes an input sensor disposed on the deformable body and configured to detect tactile input, a motion tracking component disposed on the deformable body and configured to detect movement of the computer mouse, and a communications component configured to wirelessly communicate tactile input and motion tracking data to the computing device.”

Microsoft Foldable Mouse – Design

In addition, the patents also showcase some diagrams that explain the design idea behind the foldable mouse.

You can find the rest of the figures in the WIPO IP Portal, where the patent is listed. As it is just at the patent stage, we don’t even know that Microsoft really started engineering the actual device. Until another leak or the company’s announcement, nothing can confirm that this foldable mouse could see the light. However, let’s see what else these tech companies will fold in the coming future.

So that’s been it. Thank you for reading, and do share the article if you get a bit piece of information. Also, keep an eye on this space for more relevant updates. Stay safe, and we hope to see you around.
